Marcus Rashford is set to trigger his release clause at Manchester United. The England star's future is uncertain after a successful loan spell at Barcelona.

What happened?

Newcastle is backed to trigger Marcus Rashford's release clause by Man United insider Mick Brown. Brown told Football Insider that the north-east giants could soon submit a formal offer for the England World Cup star.

Why it matters for Marcus Rashford

Rashford earned a place in England's World Cup squad after showing fine form out on loan at Barcelona last season. He was reportedly keen to make a permanent move to the Camp Nou, but they decided against triggering his £26m buy clause.

What comes next?

Recent reports have claimed that Man United retains a £40m release clause in his existing contract, with several clubs keen on exercising it. His next move currently seems unlikely to be confirmed until after the end of England's World Cup campaign.

Rashford last played for the Red Devils in December 2024 before going out on loan to Aston Villa. He proved his quality under Unai Emery, then helped Barca to the La Liga title with 14 goals and 11 assists in 49 games last season.

Mick Brown exclusively told Football Insider that he was bitterly disappointed and couldn't understand why Manchester United couldn't come to terms with what the problems were and solve them. Brown feels that Manchester United needs Marcus Rashford, given his explosive pace and ability to take people out of the game.

As things go now, somebody's got to tell Brown why Marcus Rashford isn't worth £28m. He thinks that there aren't too many players about like that who can do that. Brown also mentioned that Newcastle paid more than that to sign the Brentford striker and Rashford's better.

Aston Villa could sell Ezri Konsa to pave way for a Marcus Rashford deal, according to an expert. Rashford will return to being a Man United player on 1 July, but seemingly has no future at the club under former teammate Michael Carrick.

Sources have told Football Insider that Villa retains an interest in Rashford as they look to add more quality to their squad ahead of a Champions League return. He rediscovered his best form under Emery, with four goals and five assists in 17 appearances on loan.

Tottenham also holds a close interest in his signature, according to reports, but any club keen on a move will have to stump up £40m this summer.
